THE FOREST
When I go into the forest
it feels like home, the birds
chirping, the leaves falling,
the fox tip-toeing by me,
the stick, the stone, the
leaf, the tree, the egg and
its newborn baby bird.
When I go into the forest
my body feels tingly. I know
this is where I am meant to be.

THE BEACH
A cold salty water a kid
will splash around in and I will get
out of the warm water to the
cold sand, I will pick up a
towel and umbrella to block the
sun, a warm sun. And I hear
the kid laughing. And I begin
to feel at home.

FLOWERS
I walked to the park,
Flowers. I went to the
museum, Flowers.
I went to the mall,
Flowers. Everywhere
I went… Flowers!
Big ones, small ones,
everywhere I went
I saw them. Flowers.

THE FIELD AND ME
The word called "Hike!"
echoed through the air
and I ran down to the
field. I received the
ball and jumped over
the cornerback, and the
safety, and dashed through
the rest and jumped into
the end zone and did my
best.

ICE SKATING
Swooshing and twirling, leaping
and jumping: ice skating is beauty.
The ice on the ground is like a
refreshing popsicle on a
hot summer day. Feel the
movement on the ice whisking
and swooshing. Ice skating is beauty.
Just feel it in the air.

MOONBEAMS AND BEAMMOONS
Moonmeans are long, pretty,
swirly. The pearl inside is just
like the seed of a fruit.
Beammoons are different, they
are still long, pretty, swirly,
but inside of the the
beammoon is a touch
of moonlight.

BLUE
Blue freshwater shimmers
in the sunlight
like diamonds.
Blue blinds my eye like a
bright light in my room.
Blue makes me feel calm and
relaxed.
The blue morning glories
shine in my backyard.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY
I had no friends
I took the bus
We didn’t have recess
My Mom stayed at our old home
I didn’t have that much toys
But now, here I am
writing poems.

OUTRAGEOUS
Outrageous can be like crazy plus.
Like piles of trash that have not been collected.
Outrageous is cars honking in the street.
Outrageous brings humor to our world.

JOY
Running outside, with a happy heart.
Your feet are thumping the ground so hard.
Joy is with you whatever you do,
you don’t know what summons this inside of you.

ME
Me. A shining star.
I aim for solution.
I cause effect of light.
I have emotion. So do you.
I can relate to every personality.
One day, in the sun, maybe
I will learn to cooperate with others.
But I already now how to
Appreciate others.
I just wish I knew.

FAKE ME
I’m a wolf in the trees
I tackle bees
I’m a bee making honey
I’m a dragon breathing fire
I’m a bird catching fish
I’m a fish swimming
I’m an ant making a hole
I’m a flamingo dancing

BUTTERFLY
Flapping colored
wings sucking on
fruit juice
something that
only lives
once
one migration
one life
and sometimes
one wing
But when it comes
back
Home
It lays an egg
and closes
its eyes as
its heart
fails
Butterfly life
is precious

HANDS
I took your hand
we ran through the valleys we
ran through the mountains we
ran through the fields we
ran so much I almost couldn't
feel
I heard thump-thump of the
little doll on your side
you revealed your heart
and we ran like you just
can through your pride

INFINITY
The world stretches out, above us,
around us, below us.
Every inch miles, step is small
in comparison to the giant world surrounding us.14
It seems to stretch out for infinity,
endless, seemingly endless.
Somehow, as humans I think we like to watch
everything larger than us, learn and fly. Some
things, like wings, we wish we had, and we
can fly without wings in our dreams
Yet somehow we can’t even be jealous.
It would be like being jealous of a flower,
or a star.
And yet somehow we can fly.
In our words, in our songs, even in our smiles.
We can fly, soar with our dreams

RIVER
Run to the river.
Looking at the river.
I wonder how deep it goes. Jump
in the river, see
where it takes you.
See all the wonderful
places, keep going, keep going. until
you see the end
and reflect on things that you
have seen, breathe in breathe
out: you are one of
them now.

RING OF FIRE
Vanish
to dusk
away from
the light
and into
the dark
away away
with no
goodbye the
bright turns
to dark
the bright
of the
moon dead the
light of the ring
of fire dead
all dead.
Nothing

IF YOU'RE MOSS
Sit and
shine
in the
warmth
of the sun
Decorate a
lonely piece of
oak bark, and make
it magical
decorate a little rock
and make
it huge
Give an odor
of perfume
to the vast
woods
Make yourself
a roof in a
little cottage for fairies
that pass by
Let the little
bugs touch
your fur
and sit
17
on you
for the
afternoon

IF I WAS A FLOWER
I would sit in the soil
Waiting to grow
I would burst out of the ground
Being Lush
Being Sweet
Looking like jewels under a summer glow
I would look up
To the sun
And say
Please
Let me…
GROW!

WHERE I'M FROM
I'm from my alarm going off at 7:15
I'm from my parents telling me not to be late for school
The hustle and bustle of 7th Ave
I'm speeding like a cheetah, running to school
I'm through the wind through my hair at Coney Island
I'm from reading on the F train
I'm from my aunts running late because of delays
I'm from waking up early to get bagels for breakfast
From trying to wake up, but end up going back to sleep
I'm from looking at the skyscrapers from the train
I'm from the dog howling downstairs
With the stomping neighbor upstairs
I'm from the smells of K-Town as I'm sitting down for lunch
I am from sitting down and writing this poem.

THINGS TO DO IF YOU WERE A PENCIL
Tell the paper what you’re saying
FIGHT away the eraser
Run while making letters
Learn to write when you’re born
Get a haircut at the sharpener
Make shapes for drawings
Write in different ways
DO NOT BREAK
Have a pen copy your work
Listen to the noise you make
Jump on and off the paper

PENCIL
I dance across the paper
Stopping only to see my creations
CRACK
My tip breaks
I am grasped out of my word
wonderland
Despair and agony growing like a
tree inside me
I am twisted and turned this
way and that a blade slicing me
finally the torture ends
I am lifted back to my wonderland
The smiling faces of my creations
greeting me
And I start dancing

IF YOU ARE AN AMERICAN FLAG
If you are an American flag you will waver
in the winter wind
as you peer down at the classroom below
red stripes climb up your silky smooth body
like rock climbers
as stars dance in your blue sky
you hang from your wooden perch
every Monday students pledge to you
even though you are just a flag you
represent so much more
every night the classroom closes its
doors trusting you to guard it
because you are an American flag

STAPLER CRAB
Stapler Crab, crab of the classroom
a happy citizen but…
when it spots its victim paper and
touches it
CLAMP!
all the work together. Don't rush out
of energy!
Make bonus of paper
as you clash you're full of amazing
power. CLAMP it with your claw
and now our work is done over and now you can rest
you have had your fun.
But stapler is always watching
waiting for its next victim!

WHERE I'M FROM
I am from roaring crowds in Times
Square and from traffic jams on the
Brooklyn Bridge. I am from the smell
of pizza watering your mouth and giant
pretzels. I am from subway rumbles like
a dragon. I am from public schools to
short walks in the park. I am
from skyscrapers looking like they go
to outer space. I am from the
smoke buildings in the daylight
and no stars in sight at night.
I am from the the sweet smell
of the flowers in the Central
Garden and the loud games
in the Barclays Center. I am
from when the lights never go
out at night.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WERE WATER
If you were water you would
slide down rocky drops.
See the tall trees and their bushy
leaves leaving no space to see the sky.
Touch the cool, smooth, shiny, gray
bushes glinting in the sun, standing
up tall, you’d leap and sashay all day
long. If you were water you’d be crystal
clear like a mirror, and
people could look into
you and see the reflection. If you were
water you would hear birds talking in the
trees, hear the wind howling around you
as you slide down the slope.

I AM FROM
I am from the flashing lights twinkling in my eyes
I am from the honking cars and trucks all around
Making my ears pound
Tall buildings looming above me
I am from rush hour and traffic jams
I am from shops on every block
I am from the sound sound of bustling streets
Broken islands
The taste of oily pepperoni pizza
I am from the city of famous people
I am from a maze of streets
I am from the city of racing around but not getting places
I am from the city of history
I am from the working city
I am from the city of no gardens

IF YOU WERE A BOOK
be flipped page by page
while someone's reading you
live in a cubby
let someone carry you to
a giant chair
paint yourself in different
colors
smell like dust
let your book
be a 3 digit number
of pages
see everybody around
you land in some different
spots
let someone write you
and draw you while you
lay down

THINGS TO DO IF YOU ARE THE SKY
wrap yourself
in a blue

cry your

fall down
your face
let a cold
soft breeze
fly past you.

settle on you.

I AM FROM
I'm from the Weissman family
who always seem to have
some drama going on.
I'm from my mothers
misu soup she makes
from scratch
From the I survived book series
and reading every single one
over and over.
I'm from scary things
but never getting nightmares
protected by the dream catchers
all over my room
I'm from my nonbinary parent Abi
who is always acting crazy and funny
From my teacher Jessica
who is so kind to everyone
I am from my love for
penguins and dogs
From cars honking so loudly
in the mornings, on my way to school
From my parents saying they will
Give me a dollar every time they curse
But they never dp.
From dance class almost every day of the week and still
wanting to add contemporary and modern.
I'm from having no siblings
and telling my parents
I never ever want one
I am from my family and friends
who love me for who I am every day.

PEACE
Peace

TAKING A PEEK
The song
playing in your head.
It's like magic
Tick tock
Taking a peek
to make sure
we're better.
You're up.
You'll do great.
Not sure if
that's true.
I am on stage.
The song begins.
That same feeling
every time
Zip Zip
it's over now.
As we walk off
stage right,
Me and my friends
sharing
a bad cupcake
memories I will treasure

WHAT I WOULD
I would be a cheetah,
As fast as a car
With speed like lightning.
With colors binding together
In one final strike.
Amazing hunter with speed
Never seen before.
Colors like lightning.
Faster than thunder.
Drilling my speed
Into an enemy,
Running through the
African savanna,
A cheetah.
That is me.

LIGHT
Light, I see it in the morning

MY HOME
I love my home but sometimes it can be a crazy zone
I love my home but sometimes I need to do my best and have some fun with my
friends
My neighborhood is like my community, where I can just be me
Everyday I think about my friends to make sure they're safe until I rest
Until day and night I make sure they're alright
When I'm sad I'll be alright because everyday I see a shine
My home is the place where I'll be okay
For now we all will be okay where our home is safe

THE WINDOW
When I look out my window and I see
St John's Cathedral
When morning is new
And in the hugeness of the heavens
The sky is partner to the sun's desire
It is there
Like a star
Far away,
Yet close
Buildings so high
Surround me
Comforting,
Steadfast
To leave
To go
Away from that
How many waves of sadness will crash upon me
The first time I look out my new window,
At a new street,
In a new neighborhood, at a new street
In a place that I can never call home

ELEMENTS
In the island secret heart
With the elements there comes a spark
With air and earth, water and fire
They’re constantly coming, they never tire.

To control all the elements before they take flight
So hurry now, and risk the fall
For if not, the elements will consume us all
